Hi people,

I heard recently about wsocial.eu.

Can I have your opinions please?

https://www.cryptopolitan.com/eu-500-million-launching-w-compete-with-x/

What is it based on?

Is it free software?

Is it decentralized?

How does it relate to the #fediverse?

#W #Wsocial

Cryptopolitan

EU is pouring €500 million into launching W, designed to compete directly with X

The European Union is backing a €500 million push to launch W, a new social media platform designed as a regulated alternative to Elon Musk’s X.

@ Jan Vlug Seems to be a serious EU effort to create a platform where everyone can post, but where everybody is verified. That means you'll have to trust EU laws instead of Musk or Suckerberg.

Would mean that hate speech, disinformation and other Twitter-like abuse can be easily prosecuted if necessary, which would make moderation a small effort.

As far as I gathered, it's not open source, and it uses the AT Protocol, like BlueSky.

I personally think it could be a very good platform for publishing "official" information (governments, shops, journalists, researchers, schools and such), because every account is verified.

Also means you won't find any whistle blowers or "naughty" content. Which, I think, is fine because there are other platforms for that, especially the Fediverse.

@hans it is indeed fully based on ATProto which means: everything is public. People can easily see the accounts anyone is blocking, which has potential for abuse.

In addition, requiring government IDs to sign up isn’t really my idea of “privacy focused.”

Moreover:

They completely plagiarized the concept behind Eurosky… mere days before its launch. Only difference: requiring IDs.

I’ll cover this and more in an article this week…
