Wow.
First thought, even before shaking my head, was:
Ah, they are adjusting laws to better fit to the miserable quality level checks at Boeing.

@ProPublica

This news from the US Department of Transportation makes me think of John de Lancie's character in Breaking Bad, Donald Margolis, who happens to be an air traffic controller.

What could possibly go wrong with using generative AI to draft rules that govern safety?

Spoilers at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_characters_in_the_Breaking_Bad_franchise#Donald_Margolis

@ProPublica instantly reminded me of Metal Gear Solid 2

Screenshot from a codec call conversation in the 2001 video game "Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty". Conversation is between PATRIOTS AI, represented in screenshot by Colonel Campbell with mostly transparent face skin to reveal skull, and Raiden. The AI is stating to Raiden, "To begin with -- we're not what you'd call -- human."

On the upside, if regulations will be "good enough", this could drastically reduce people's eagerness to fly - which would have immediate positive climate impacts...😉

But seriously - this is kind of ironic that Trump and republicans are getting excited about "more government per minute" when I thought they wanted less of it. If they can spit out more laws and faster than before, it just means more government, not less. Someone usually always needs to oversee, implement, train, communicate all these new laws. Or it's just more paper.

@ProPublica Apart from all the other problems, which are of course many, AI responses are based on requests. Even if the AI were perfect, you would get quite different responses if your request asked either to create a policy that maximised consumer safety, or one that made corporate well-being the priority. I strongly doubt we'll get told what was asked for.
