Two actions to regulate AI in Washington state! (1/N)

#waleg is considering a lot of interesting AI-related bills. Here's a look at 5 of them from Taylor Soper earlier this month (although that's on the tip of the iceberg)

5 new proposals to regulate AI in Washington state, from classrooms to digital companions

Washington state lawmakers are taking another run at regulating artificial intelligence. The proposals come as Congress continues to debate AI oversight with little concrete action, leaving states to experiment with their own guardrails.

The first action is on HB 2157, regulating high-risk uses of AI. The House Technology, Economic Development, & Veterans (TED&V) committee has an exec session on Tuesday where they'll vote on the bill and potential amendments.

The bill still needs strengthening, but tech lobbyists have killed similar bills in other states so we want to support it. Here's an action suggesting some specific improvements, and encouraging the committee to advance the bill.

And on Wednesday, the same committee has an executive session on HB 2841, prohibiting surveillance pricing in grocery stores. “Surveillance pricing” lets companies set a different price for each consumer based on the maximum they are willing to pay.

That shouldn't be legal, and this bill -- which sponsor Rep. Fosse developed working with the UFCW 3000 union -- prohibits it.

More Washington state action on surveillance princing! A snap hearing on the just-introduced SB 6312, a companion bill to HB 2841. "Surveillance pricing” lets companies set a different price for each consumer based on the maximum they are willing to pay.

That shouldn't be legal, and this bill -- developed working with the UFCW 3000 union -- prohibits it.
