So in #Uganda they have found a way to deny internet access if you use vpn? I used to imagine VPN's actually hide you from such things. They banned all social media (but I guess the fediverse is not on their crosshairs either because they don't know about it, or its not ban-able due to the numerous sites? So we've been using VPN but now if you have vpn running you don't get any access. This is frightening.

@dilmandila you are right that it is very difficult to block the Fediverse because even if your server gets blocked you can use web clients like Phanpy to connect to your server. There are also thousands of servers that you can migrate to.

@moftasa That I think will be the beauty of federation if it takes root everywhere. Right now to block any corporate social media you have a handful of targets, but the fedi gives thousands of targets, potentially millions, making it more difficult to block.

But I wonder if fedi will ever deliver the kind of political change that corp social media gave its users, hence why dictators fear it, since fedi discourages viral activity and influencing, so it might never pose a political threat.

@dilmandila

Interesting thread, I've been wondering how this can be done since HMG in UK (and others in the EU) have been contemplating this.

If IP blocking is the main way, It's not that hard to run your own VPN on a cloud server, so that's an option, but obviously doesn't scale well.

In addition to Tor we can look to peer-to-peer networks for the next level - making all apps much harder to block.

I'm most familiar with Autonomi and think that's a good one to follow, and maybe try out.
