So, I'm looking to migrate my dropbox account (paid) to a nextcloud provider (EU-based). I've found two in the Netherlands: https://thegood.cloud/ and https://procolix.eu/ . I don't mind paying 360 euros a year instead of 100, but does anyone have any experience with these two, or other recommendations?
I have half a dozen or more systems, linux, windows, macos, android, ipados, remarkable and I would like most of them to sync selectively.
@halla This isn't what you asked for so feel free to ignore it, but this sounds to me like a potential use case for https://syncthing.net/, which doesn't require any cloud services at all
@jamey @halla I know they mentioned the desire for a cloud storage solution in another post, but my other concern would be their mention of selective syncing. Does Syncthing support virtual file systems? I can’t find a mention of it in their docs, but I’m not a user so it may be under a different name.
As an example: Only the Nextcloud server and one desktop have enough storage space to hold a full copy of the files. The other office desktop is constantly adding or changing files but doesn’t have much space (it needs to be able to see all the folders though). The marketing person works from home and stores a local copy of their files, but needs to be able to access the (massive) photo library on occasion. VFS support is thus critical to meeting these needs. If Syncthing supports a setup like this, I may need to consider moving them over.
@ClickyMcTicker @halla Ah, I may not have understood what "selective syncing" means since I haven't used DropBox. With Syncthing I've set up different folders to be synced with different devices and that has worked fine for my purposes. I'm not aware of any fuse/VFS interface to Syncthing, and while it seems to me like such a thing could exist, I would guess it's a bit out of scope for a project that's intended for devices which aren't necessarily always online. And while I believe there's a way to configure a device to not sync some subset of the files in a folder—via a list of ignored filename patterns, if I recall correctly—I think the usability of that approach for your use case would be pretty poor. So yeah, you both probably want to stick with a server somewhere, for potentially different reasons.
@jamey @ClickyMcTicker Right now, with Dropbox, we have one 2TB account, and one user name, but I sync the halla folder, she syncs the irina folder, and we both sync the #krita folder.
@halla @ClickyMcTicker Yeah, that you can do with Syncthing, but as you said you want off-site storage. In principle you could get a VPS and run Syncthing on that yourself, but I assume if you wanted to self-host something you wouldn't have been asking about managed Nextcloud providers. 😁
Another alternative for you could be to treat off-site backups as a separate project from in-home syncing between devices. It is nice to have the sync traffic stay in the local network instead of every device needing to copy the same files from a server in another country, plus backups storage can be cheaper than full-featured file serving, and backups can be encrypted without giving the cloud provider the keys.
