Want to know how Labour smash National at the #nzelection2026 simple.

1: kick Chippy to the curb give Kieran McAnulty the ball.

2: Actually smash up the Aussie control over the NZ food supply and banking.

3: Start a 5 to 10 cent tax on every $ by any online entity that moves profit out of NZ.

4: decouple from the US $ start focusing on the euro and building the Indian trade the potential is far greater for NZ.

5: pledge to actually increase funding in social spending like healthcare, MSD don't punch down reach down and pull people up.

But they did so well borrowing 20 year old Socialist Worker campaigns, later recycled by Mana and TPM, to take GST off produce. If they promise any policy sufficient to actually fix some of the problems the country faces, they might scare off the Nat and Winston First voters they want to win back, by promising a new veneer on top of the status quo : P

A country isn't a business it should never make a profit "my biggest raaa and why i was never a Helen Clarke fan".

If our government ever has money siting in the bank it means 2 things.

1: They are taking way to much money in tax.

2: They aren't spending enough in the national community with things like housing, health, welfare, emergency services.

In other words we should always be in debt or breaking even we're a nation not a faceless corporate entity with our sole reason for existence to pay shareholders were thier boss they aren't ours.

💯%.

I take an MMT-ish view on public spending. If the money supply is growing faster than the real economy (ie available goods and services), then the government ought to run a surplus to reduce the amount of money in the economy. To avoid excessive inflation. But that's the only reason to run a surplus.

@strypey @CraigKendrickNZ Bingo. If they're running a surplus, it's because the private sector is running up greater debt. In boom times this may not seem all that bad, but then the bills come due. In a recession it's like putting an asthma victim in a choke hold.
