So I literally spent 2 hours trying to get my Canon Pixma printer to work... it suddenly stopped responding with the error message "your printer is offline" ... even if it was connected by cable.

I reset the driver - no change.

I changed cables - still nothing.

I tried on 2 different computers (desktop and laptop) - always "offline".

Then I revived my faithful Macbook Air 2014 (which I'd been using up till last year) and plugging in the USB 2 cable (without adapters) did the trick, as I had suspected.

This is why I keep my beloved Macbook Air 2014 around: 12 years old and still working wonderfully 🤗

@elena It's probably the age of the Macbook that saved you - maintenance of USB drivers for most printers seems to have ended years ago. Probably because it's no good for portable devices.

I'm a big fan of cables in general (10x cheaper, 10x faster, 10x more secure than wireless) but not for the specific case of USB printer connections. Use Ethernet or Wifi if you can. That's what eventually got my own Canon Pixma working, but it wasn't easy.

(I know you said "even if connected by cable" which implies you tried Wifi first, so this is not a criticism, it just might help others in general.)

@philmck thank you Phil! I noticed on Canon's support pages that their driver is not compatible with MacOS 15 (Sequoia) but it is with MacOS 26 (Tahoe)...

I'm not upgrading 'cause I really don't like the idea of Liquid Glass taking over my desktop computers... happily printing from my old Macbook Air for now 😅
