Hubble image of Arp 224, also known as NGC 3921.

NGC 3921 is a pair of interacting disk galaxies that are in the late stages of a merger. The history of this merger is recorded in the tails and loops that surround the center.

The galaxies were about the same mass and likely collided about 700 million years ago.

A galaxy merger remnant fills most of the frame. In the center is a roughly circular area, that may be a face-on disk. It has a bright blue-white center that is surrounded by a orange ring. A few light brown dust lanes cross the center. Surrounding the disk is a large, dramatic, looping tidal tail that forms the shape of the number 9 that is dotted with blue star clusters. The bottom of the loop of the 9 coincides with the center of the galaxy and the majority of the 9 is offset to the right. A faint hazy structure appears below the disk and the loop of the 9, which is also dotted with blue star clusters. The black background of space is dotted with stars and small background galaxies, including an edge-on spiral galaxy in the upper left.
