There are two short films featuring Hinomaru Hatanosuke that were released in the 1930s.
They are on youtube, but the quality is poor.
Is anyone aware of a better copy of these two?

I found the DVD from which the youtube versions are derived, so I at least have them in higher bitrate now.
But the DVD makes some bad choices, and it is the same flickery youtube copy.
So uhhh Temporal smoothing here we come.
Alright

Danemon Ban: The Monster Exterminator (Japan - 1935)
No subtitles at this time, but less flickery than the copy on the internet archive.
Here's a slightly better Hinomaru Hatanosuke - Haunted House.
Higher bitrate than the youtube copy, and I tried some temporal smoothing to deal with the flickering, but it ... didn't do much.
As somebody who used to watch Japanese animated fable TV series a long time ago locally in the Bay area, kind of familiar with the way Japanese fables work.
And certainly the Japanese are absolutely the best when it comes to demons. I have to say after watching a few YouTube channel channels about people living in the countryside in Japan I know where all the ideas for demons come from.
This is a pretty crazy little cartoon
@GhostOnTheHalfShell There's a thread above. Check some of the others.
@ajroach42 They're in the Japanese Anime Classic Collection, a 4 disc DVD set, which is also on torrent
These are japanese cartoons from the 30s, based on a popular manga series.
Here are some pages from the manga.
Here's another early cartoon adapted from a manga. This one is about a ghost hunter: https://archive.org/details/manga-shojoji-no-tanuki-bayashi-dan-danemon-1935
It is also currently only available in fairly low quality.
I have not found any better copies of any of the above three yet, but I did find some other things.
Including this cute cartoon from 1933 from the Japanese Film Archives: https://animation.filmarchives.jp/en/works/view/66519
These public domain japanese cartoons will make there way to #NETV sometime soon.
Here's a picture from The Nation of Fish (1928).
