So I am actually sitting in a "Editor's Roundtable" at this conference and points made by one of the editors (for a journal by a for-profit publisher) actually are:

- We evaluate the use of AI in our processes by evaluating if it will increase the impact factor of our journal (paraphrased)
- We consider having a bit more open access because "some young scholars might want to publish open access to get to the core of the community fast and that their papers are indexed by AI" but "more senior researchers might not want to publish open access because people will pay to access their papers anyhow".

I am too much in #OpenScience circles obviously because I am time and time surprised by how strange many of the people in scientific publishing roles actually think about these roles.

Indeed. Sad but common.

@brembs @tomstafford one thing, which was new to me in its absurdity was the argument by one editor that "we consider switching to open access, because this should raise our impact factor, because it makes it easier for AI scrapers to pick up our articles and then suggest them to researchers again".

Never heard that one before?

@mario_angst_sci @tomstafford

I filed this one under "publisher version of the OA citation advantage"? 😆

@brembs @tomstafford I mean it is a coherent argument, but talking about doing the right things for all the wrong reasons... 😅
