Mark Carney essentially said that the liberal rules based world order was a convenient lie everyone went along with because American hegemony opened up markets and sea lanes for them.

After decades in which the imperialist neoliberal order was not even questioned in the West, less than three weeks into it 2026, Canada, one of the biggest US vassals is saying this. 馃槅

#canada #cdnpoli #geopolitics #liberalism #imperialism

For decades, countries like Canada prospered under what we called the rules-based international order. We joined its institutions, we praised its principles, we benefited from its predictability. And because of that, we could pursue values-based foreign policies under its protection.

We knew the story of the international rules-based order was partially false that the strongest would exempt themselves when convenient, that trade rules were enforced asymmetrically. And we knew that international law applied with varying rigour depending on the identity of the accused or the victim.

This fiction was useful, and American hegemony, in particular, helped provide public goods, open sea lanes, a stable financial system, collective security and support for frameworks for resolving disputes.

So, we placed the sign in the window. We participated in the rituals, and we largely avoided calling out the gaps between rhetoric and reality.

This bargain no longer works. Let me be direct. We are in the midst of a rupture, not a transition.

@yogthos I鈥檓 not even sure what to make of it yet.

Most of the bills his government have passed contain concessions demanded by the US. He鈥檚 still pressing this country into a resource state. Making trips to Qatar and China.

And he framed it all using a stereotype about communism and yet also borrows the language of labour organizing?

Is there a decent analysis of his speech and what it actually means?

@agentultra Carney is a die hard neoliberal at the end of the day, and that's what makes the admission so important, even he now sees that the whole liberal order is collapsing

@yogthos maybe that is what鈥檚 getting me. Quoting Havel and yet being a conservative neoliberal is an odd combination.

Progress?
