Hashtags are the best. People have been talking about The Forkiverse for a couple of days as if everyone knows what it is.
Someone used the #Forkiverse hashtag so I clicked on it and ended up in an ocean of toots about it where I finally learned that it's a Fediverse instance made by some podcasters, and the instance gained traction from the podcast.
#hashtags rule. Use them.

Hashtags are game changer. Why tf did nobody else (well, not Twitter, anyway) think to make them followable? Obvious, in retrospect.

I don’t even understand the point of a hashtag you can’t follow…but they rule here as long as posts are public or quiet.

You can also follow interesting groupbots that aggregate and boost on specific topics.

@FediTips has more one these.

Before tags could be followed they were useful for;

* click on a tag in a post, see what other posts your server is aware of containing that tag, and presumably on a related topic

* think of a few tags representing topics you want to see more posts on, put them into into search, find new folks to follow

Useful for populating the timelines of new accounts/ services.

Instagram used to support hashtag following and stopped it, presumably because they didn't like people having control over their timeline. They wanted people to be entirely under the spell of Instagram's algorithm.

Some people came over to the Fediverse specifically because of this.
