Do I understand correctly that even if I host my own #gotosocial instance, there's no way of loading replies from other instances from users I don't follow, unless I go to the original instance?

@ury not the case, replies show up as expected.
For clients, I’d recommend Phanpy.social, elk.zone or https://masto-fe.superseriousbusiness.org/login.html
