Macross 7: it's kind of incredible how the show drops the Protoculture decided that creating giant soldiers to do their battle for them was the clean thing to do followed by "and then we made even more powerful soldiers called the Evil"

I am really enjoying Macross 7 so far. Both on the obvious level of "it's the show where very good dad J-Rock defeats space vampires with the power of rock" and because it's like, the mech series I've seen be genuinely committed to "what does pacifism accomplish" and going all in on what music and art means in the context of a conflict. Considering this was the same year as Gundam Wing, ground zero for "it's totally pacifism if you just shoot to disable"... 
Do I agree with everything the show's going for? Eh, but in the words of Ray in the show "it would be nice..."
then in a decade we get the 00's and the truly galaxy brained takes on music bringing about peace in mecha with Gundam. And I'm not even just necessarily picking on SEED here as usual with it having "girlboss idol singer becomes queen of space" plot, but more Gundam 00's "song brings about magic newtype peace." Also the song in 00 is truly dire.
@gourd Macross 7 is wild, I liked it a lot. It's also very padded, so it can be a bit of a slog in the middle. Another very '90s flaw it has is that out of its four female characters, one says nothing for the entire show and the other only ever says one line, once (watch out for it).
Definitely watch the short movie "The galaxy is calling me" which is even more bonkers than the rest of the show and has an amazingly good duet (Heart and Soul). Enjoy!

The Flower Girl is an incredible running gag. I do think Mylene (occasional questionable costuming aside) and Milia get some good material... especially compared to other 90's mech shows.

Watchted the movie yesterday, it's great. :)
@gourd oh yeah, it's really not bad for its age. On the surface the love triangle would be creepy af given Mylene is like 14 (right?) but in practice it works because there's not much actually going on. Milia has at least a very fun episode dedicated to her. Overall I found it to be a very fun show. And the first episode is so memorable because of how much over-the-top everything is.
