#meshcore #meshtastic enthusiasts, I'm thinking of a large scale emergency kit service that includes client hardware. The constraints are:
* Lowest possible price (for scale)
* Lowest amount of materials (for recycling at end of life)
* Can use readily available power sources: AA batteries + usb-c

Implicit, therefore:
* No screen
* No built-in battery

Bonus: a firmware switch to toggle meshtastic, meshcore.

There probably isn't anything like it, but can you point me to how I could start?

@toldtheworld One thing I learned in the Disaster Recovery / Business Continuity trenches is an untested plan is an unreliable plan.

For comms, that means regularly using the tool both to get basic comfort and to work out the kinks.

So, in addition to the hardware, it is important to get people participating in their local mesh. Are people with the kits within range of other nodes? Does nearby mesh infra rely on mains power?

@mkb good points. The goal is to have some very dedicated people mixed among a majority interested only in having something available in case of a rare emergency. With enough participants, the (human) cost of a few not being able to set up the kits is lowered. That would mean, though, they'd have to be pre-configured to Just Work. Am I being too hopeful?

@toldtheworld Is there an existing reliable mesh? If so, then people have an OK chance of slotting into it. Yes, you can distribute preconfigured nodes. (I’ve taken to bringing a few to any gathering in case someone I chat with expresses interest.)

Start with the dedicated people and get to where you’re confident in the local mesh infrastructure. If you want tips on building that out and testing how well it is working, come join us in the BayMesh Discord.
