Is there a person you can hire (NOT an interior designer) who comes into your room and helps you set it up to be accessible for your physical and brain needs?

I know I could change things in my room. Move things. Get different storage. Do stuff to make it more accessible for the life I live now but I don't have the brain nor energy to actually do it.

Sounds like you need an OT...

https://www.rcot.co.uk/learn-about-occupational-therapy/what-occupational-therapy/find-occupational-therapist

The Royal College of Occupational Therapists

Find an occupational therapist

Occupational therapy helps you live your best life at home, at work – and everywhere else. It’s about being able to do the things you want and need to do. That could mean helping you overcome challenges learning at school, going to work, playing sport or simply doing the dishes. Everything is focused on your wellbeing and your ability to take part in activities.

@alexisbushnell

Just enter the town in the UK where you live and that you're an adult and you should find a good number nearby...

Map of south Wales and south-west England showing multiple red numbered location pins showing the locations of Occupational Therapists.

OTs are clustered around Cardiff, Newport, Bristol, Weston-super-Mare, Bridgwater and Taunton, with additional pins across Pembrokeshire, Swansea, Exmoor, Dartmoor, Exeter and the north Devon coast.

Have boosted as a lot of folks have said they'd find it useful so hopefully if there's some in that area they'll be able to get in touch

@alexisbushnell it’s really an occupational therapist that should do these things for you as others have mentioned. You should be able to get referred i would think. You shouldn’t need to pay.

@alexisbushnell sounds like what you are asking for is an ergoterapist.

Not sure if you are asking for a specific person though?

@IO I was just looking for the name of the job or what to search for. But if people have local recommendations that would also be appreciated!

Just with the nature of the Fediverse I realise most people replying are likely in different countries or just not near enough to me for a specific person recommendation to really help.

@alexisbushnell good then I hope you can get a bit further into your search from knowing what to look for.

I am in Denmark and I assume you’re in Wales? So I won’t be able to come with suggestions

This needs to be a thing!

I suggested this at a Canadian forum as a way the government could better support people with long covid.

Not just "here's a reimbursement for your remodeling costs" but "here's someone like an occupational therapist but for living spaces who will visit your living space to help you develop a plan. They will do things like determine whether it would help most to replace your microwave with one that doesn't beep incessantly and has a door that's easier to open and close or to replace your fridge with one that doesn't force you to bend over to reach things."

@robotistry apparently an occupational therapist or an ergotherapist may be the things according to the replies I've had.

I'm going to look into both.

@alexisbushnell It's advice rather than a third party live advisor but the book "How to keep house while drowning" has some of this in it.

@leiawelsh I have read that and it was great. My issue is more working with the space I have now, for example; move this set of drawers here, use this for clothes storage to free that up, put a net here to get stuff off the floor, mount a desk here to work from bed.

@alexisbushnell Your local council should offer a disabled facilities grant and an occupational therapy assessment. Example: https://www.leicester.gov.uk/your-community/housing/help-for-homeowners/adapting-your-home-disabled-facilities-grants/

Leicester City Council

We can provide the disabled facilities grant for adaptations to your home, so you can continue to live there safely.

I think the job title of the person you're looking for might be "occupational therapist"? It might even be possible to get referred to one via the NHS, rather than having to hire one: once referred, IME they tend to show up quite quickly.
