Ocean temperatures hit a record high in 2025, with ocean heat content rising by about 23 zettajoules — roughly 210 times humanity’s annual electricity use.

Because oceans absorb around 90% of excess heat from greenhouse gases, the increase is a stark signal of global warming, driving sea-level rise and extreme weather.
