A kid with a Gilbert U-238 Atomic Energy Lab kit, a real educational toy sold by the A.C. Gilbert Company in 1950–1951. The kit actually included low-level radioactive uranium ore samples (in those little jars), a Geiger counter (the metal box he's peering into), headphones for listening to the clicks, and other items like small mineral specimens.
