About a month before solstice, I finally got my flip phone working with my mobile carrier. The results have been ... mixed. Let's start with positives;

* I can respond to texts without any risk of getting distracted by other notifications

* I can be contacted in an emergency, without having to carry a touchscreen computer

* I can flatten the battery of my pocket tablet, eg by listening to podcasts or watching videos, and still receive calls and texts

Most of the downsides are specific to this model of flip phone; a TCL OneTouch originally tied to the One NZ network. Things like;

* no predictive text

* very limited message storage

* no tool I can use to set timers for cooking etc

* no notepad app

* no calendar sync, although at least there is a calendar

It really is like a late 1990s phone.

One other annoyance with the TCL OneTouch, MMS doesn't work out of the box. At least not on the 2Degrees mobile network. Seems like it is supported, in theory, but I'm going to need to monkey around with the settings and maybe get 2Degrees on the phone, which has been a challenge of late.
