#academia working on 5 presentations at the same time (=5 lectures for next week) and with the greatest of horror, I discovered one of the them had about 30 slides permanently deleted. I keep moving blocks of slides from one day to another so probably yesterday I did a mess.
Last backup: before Xmas.
😱
Luckily: I put all this stuff directly in a local #Dropbox folder (Plus plan) so I just went in the web platform to check the history and restore the version pre-deletion

@franco_vazza urgh!

BTW For next time, many don’t know this but if you have a Mac and are using TimeMachine it also does a local on disk backup going back a few weeks sometimes a day. You can use this to get back things you accidentally delete.

@ChrisWalter I have time machine but I set it to "manually", i.e. not automatic daily backup. My external HD is also not connected, so where it is going to save the daily backup?

@franco_vazza These "local snapshots" are made on your main disk and happen independently of when your back disk is plugged in. See here:

https://support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/about-time-machine-local-snapshots-mh35933/mac

I have my backup option to "hourly" but only plug my SSD disk in once a week, it then it automatically does the hourly backup - but only when it is plugged in.

I'm not sure if setting it to 'manual' would also affect the snapshots. You can start timemachine from the finder without your backup disk and see if the backups are there. If the disk is plugged in too, you will see a slight difference in color on the "lines".

Apple Support

About Time Machine local snapshots on Mac

Time Machine makes copies, each hour, of files that have changed on your Mac.

@franco_vazza Actually this

"Important: Local snapshots are only stored on disks using Apple File System (APFS) when Back Up Automatically is selected in Time Machine settings."

implies they won't be there if you set it "manual".
