From old bathtub to wormery. The bricks and bits of old paving are holding down a fine mesh screen in a vain attempt to keep the rats out. The plug hole is blocked up with a piece of paving and a large pebble beneath it leaving no gaps.

This replaces my last large wormery made from a garden storage chest left by the previous owners. It gave a couple of years of use but fell apart. Hopefully this will be a bit more sturdy!

An old bath tub just about visible. Around the edge are bricks and bits of old paving holding down a fine mesh screen. An old coffee sack is visible in the bath. It's in a winter garden so dead vegetation is all around.

@Kimberley have you come across in-the-ground wormeries before? I set 2 up last year but have been rubbish at actually putting food waste in them!

@paulcox It's raised above the ground, it just looks that way in the photo. It's actually raised on a pallet and a couple of bricks to level it as the ground is sloped.

I've used trench wormeries but not the container type. I quite like trench systems for building up compost to use in-situ next season.

@Kimberley ahh. Yeah, I just put 2 pots that I drilled holes in in the ground with weighted lids on top to stop things getting in, but so that the worms can come and go as the please, and spread the goodness around the garden themselves.
