@pikesley @cstross @TheZeldaZone I am not happy with Firefox’s current path, but tell me now, and true, have you ever donated to Mozilla.org and how often? I asked a few open source folks this today and got a lot of sheepish looks.

@mattw @pikesley @TheZeldaZone Mozilla is largely funded by corporate search engine deals with the likes of google.

THEY. DON'T. NEED. MY. MONEY.

Or yours

In addition, google pays Mozilla almost a half a billion a year to keep Google the default search engine on Firefox.

That's half a billion dollars to *not change their mind*. No actual work done, just send google traffic. Firefox neither needs your money nor is earning it.

Donating to a company that is spending time and capital on something useful makes sense. Donating to a company that is losing its way chasing after AI fantasies makes no sense.

@tbortels @mattw @pikesley @TheZeldaZone I believe Mozilla is pursuing AI because Google ordered them to, on pain of losing their search engine subsidies. That's all.

You'd think that google would simply force gemini on them as part of the deal.

But it's telling that after years of firefox, I'm running librewolf now, amusingly not because of this but because for some reason firefox is getting worse at pop-up blocking, and librewolf isn't. The AI focus simply underscores the enshitification.
