@cpm @pluralistic This summer I had to help my parents with their Specialized/Bosch e-bikes and these were a nightmare.
I had to waste 30 minutes to recover my mom's Specialized account (she isn't tech savy so the seller created it for her but she forgot tge email and password used for it) just to adjust a couple of settings on the battery power deployment curve. On top of that I found out that if you even want to sell or give away your Specialized ebike you can do it only trough an autorized reseller otherwise your identity will stay tied to the bike blocking out many features.
I fear for the day automotive manufacturers learn from this (spoiler: they're actually well into the process and they have full support from the EU since they're locking down their stuff "for our own good").

@emilianosandri @cpm @pluralistic remember #bosch wrote the code for #VW to cheat on emissions #dieselgate
Most e-bikes on the market today are built with unique and proprietary parts. They are drifting farther towards unrepairable future waste. There needs to be affordable easy conversion options, there is no shortage of suitable bikes laying around. Bikes with near infinite parts operability. Bikes are the mechanical #fediverse
#BikeTooter #cargobike
@woodenmachines @emilianosandri @cpm @pluralistic Plain mechanical bikes are still one of the pinnacles of interop.
Recently I assembled my new bike by buying part by part. Very little research and I ended up with no problems of incompatibility, despite basically every part being of a different brand altogether. Ebikes have similar potential.
But of course there is always the push for proprietary parts.
