#unplugTrump last year lead to dusting and upgrading my old NAS, lead to cancelling #streaming services, lead to buying blurays and CDs from flea markets, lead to setting up a home server, lead to installing @jellyfin, lead to switching the SAT receiver to an E2 Linux box, lead to recording TV programs, lead to my very first steps in @kdenlive this morning.

Here we are now. Owning stuff again.

A video editing software interface, specifically Kdenlive, which is currently being used to edit an episode of "Neue Geschichten vom Pumuckl". The software is in the process of rendering the video, with about 3 minutes and 47 seconds remaining.

The interface is in German, showing panels for project sequences, a timeline with video and audio tracks, and a central rendering dialog with the file path and progress.

In the preview window, the character Pumuckl is displayed. He is a small, animated boy with bright, spiky red hair that sticks up in all directions. He is wearing a yellow short-sleeved shirt and green pants, and appears to be barefoot. @sturmsucht @jellyfin @kdenlive I am taking the same adventure. Slowly progressing to owning my own data and media. No more dropbox, sharing some things via Plex (soon to move away from that too) and pulling everything into a NAS with backups. I even grabbed a copy of Wikipedia.

I commented you for the efforts. Leaving the enshitification behind takes a lot of resolve. Once done you realize just how terrible things became so slowly it was mostly imperceptible.

Sometimes there's a long chain to resolve before getting rid off a service.

Quitting my cloud meant finding a solution for 22TB of data + hassle to download it.

Getting rid off Gmail meant to install a complete alternative workflow for my photography business.

But it's actually really fun once you solved the blockers and there a great open source tools out there that makes switching easy.

And I really enjoy the cancelling-subscriptions part 😄

I quit Spotify last year, and have been building my CD/DVD collection slowly.

@sturmsucht @jellyfin @kdenlive We once found a copy of THE ANDROMEDA STRAIN on VHS in a junk shop. The guy thought he was stiffing us by charging $8.
When we got home we discovered it had never been played. It was factory new and indistinguishable from a DVD

@sturmsucht If you don't already know: TV Browser is nice for having a look at TV station programming on your PC. Also, there is a plugin available allowing you to select a TV show in TV Browser and pass the instruction for recording to your E2 box.

@sturmsucht @jellyfin @kdenlive Very good. Almost all of my music in from CDs (imported into my personal nextcloud for streaming). My problem with BluRays is the digital restriction management. Even if I own the medium, I still don't own the content to view it where and how I want (e. g. on devices without a BluRay drive). BluRay DRM is better than that of DVDs, and harder to circumvent to make personal backup copies.
