Most people would consider me a Linux and FOSS fanboy. But when it comes to professional audio, I am not. At least not yet.

Todays charming fail of the day: #Ardour does not want to load my session because 96000 does not match 96000?

Things like that happen on a daily basis, they break my creative flow constantly. I really have been thinking of just buying a Mac for music production recently... Not sure if I can stand that pain any longer, and I've been enduring for longer than a decade, contributing code, configs and bug reports.

#linuxaudio CC @ardour @linuxaudiodevelopment

@linos buy a Mac...

Or... devolve 30% of what a Mac + software licences + plugin licences, etc costs to @ardour so they can sustain development better.

Or... Buy bitwig as @linuxaudiodevelopment suggests, still cheaper than 'a mac' and supporting a company who develop audio software for Linux.

It's great there are so many choices...

After all, constraints push "creativity" imho 😉

That's what I've been doing for a decade. I don't mind constraints, not a all. I want stability and consistency. And I never got this with linux audio.

Last weeks bummer: shortly before a live performance the USB interface got disconnected: afterwards ALSA only recognized it as MIDI interface. Could only solve it via a complete system reboot. It felt like in the old windows days "Have you tried rebooting?".

Things like that just keep delaying and destroying creative processes. Most of my friends just run logic pro or abelton live and they rather can tell one such story a year, and then it's been the cable.

I guess most issues I had where not at the DAW level, though I had those too. I have lot of hopes in #Pipewire, but currently it's more a mystery box where most of the time stuff just works but sometimes it just doesn't and it leaves me with no clue where to look, how to debug and how to report. And when in 2026 changing or checking the sample rate is still a thing I have to look up in an internet search, things do not feel right for me yet.

@linos @ardour That's certainly a weird one. 🤔 What happens when you "resample" the material? Is it actually touched?

I don't have much experience with Ardour, but I hear from everywhere that it's constantly being improved and refined.

Personally, I use Bitwig and, to be honest, I'm incredibly satisfied with it on Linux, but then again, I am a total Linux Fanboy. 😎🫣😅

@linuxaudiodevelopment @linos @ardour Technically, it looks like only the placeholders in the translated message got messed up, and it intended to say something valid like "...mit eine Sampelrate von vn 96000 Hz erstellt, Device-123 läuft derzeit aber mit 44000Hz". If so, it would be an easy fix in the translation files.

But I agree with everything said about the constant friction and lack of polish when working with desktop Linux.

@ardour @roskakori @linuxaudiodevelopment The culprit might also be @pipewire tux

@linos @ardour @linuxaudiodevelopment I'm on Linux and love it, but I could certainly see you running Logic Pro on a Mac. The most important thing is getting the workflow that is just works.
