I’ve looked at Mapbox many times over the years. It’s clearly an amazing product but kind of impenetrable.

There are good docs. That’s not really what I’m getting at. It’s a general vibe of “Don’t have serious money to spend? We’re not really interested.”

…We live in capitalism. Running their infrastructure must be expensive.

It’s the asymmetry that pisses me off.

If you have money to accelerate us off a cliff, you get full access to all the toys. If you’re trying to map the path away from the cliff and have no money, here’s a brick wall you can talk to

@urlyman coincidentally I just came back on line motivated by wondering if there exist repositories of #satellite #map tiles of the planet going back 10 or so years, that are not pay-walled.

but your 2nd post here reminds me of the "good? old days" of google ... when web-pages were becoming all adverts with animated gifs and every page looked like driving into a US town. then google came along and suddenly there were just these little one-liners of pertinent info to click, kindly labelled "_ad_". dumb name by a non-dumb corp. playing a non-dumb game.

@wavesculptor good point. Google were a different company then with a different ethos and their scale was not yet big enough to corrupt them as thoroughly as it now has
