At 2:30 in the night, Lorenz A. attacked people at a club with pepperspray and threatened them a knife. He fled, and ran towards two police officers, attacking them with pepperspray. One officer fell, and while Lorenz A. passed him at short distance, fired at him.

Would you agree this is a fair summary?

I think this gives a good baseline of what kind of behaviour risks you getting shot by police in Germany.

Not that it should matter but I am a citizen of Germany since birth, live here now, and have a political science degree from the US. Yes, actually, a comparison can be done here.

Non-Germans are fully qualified to look at our history and current statistics and warn us about racism in policing.

Germany does not have the death penalty for what Lorenz did. He was shot IN THE BACK. Police who shoot people in the back should be fired and prosecuted. Otherwise we lose any moral high ground.

“But the Americans!” is what our centrists and right-wing use as an excuse to do nothing while things get worse.

Exactly, and it's an even bigger problem here in Canada, since we're right next door to the U.S. and have many cultural similarities.

White liberals constantly deflect attention from our own deep systemic racism and police/government violence by pointing out that at least we're not as bad as the U.S.

I mean … um … sure. We're also not nearly as bad as Russia, North Korea, or Israel, but I don't think any of those comparisons grants us bragging rights.
