🦊 You know you can filter stuff,
🦝 mate that's what this is. That's literally what this is. Every other filter fails because people do cute things like putting asterisks in the middle of words or crap like that, or they don't use hashtags (I only know like three people on here who actually use hashtags) or whatever, but the "Hide boosts from this account" button Just Works, reliably, I don't have to fiddle with it. This is how I filter. I hide boosts, unfollow or block, those are my filters and my timeline is stuffed absolutely full of awesome stuff from interesting people.
It works.
So turns out you can set up Subway Tooter to have a home timeline of people's posts in one tab and everyone's boosts in a completely separate tab, and I think I'm gonna give this a go for a couple of weeks and see how I like it.
Like, exhaust the toots timeline, if I still want more scrolling move over to the boosts timeline, kind of thing.
I'll let y'all know how it goes
Okay wow yeah this is the way. A couple of weeks, bullshit, one hour and I'm already going wtf that other way of doing it is just flat-out wrong
* You can follow WAY more people without your timeline getting overwhelmed - OR - follow the same number of people, you'll see all of everyone's posts and be all caught up very quickly
* You see, exclusively, posts from people you actually want to see posts from
* You see the things that these favoured people posted while doing a thing or thinking about a thing, not just stuff they found while they were stroking their phone on the toilet
* Moving from Home tab to Boosts tab is a conscious "Yes I'm out of good stuff but not yet Satisfied, bring on the lower-quality stuff that there's more of," and that is a good reminder to Stop
Absolutely no downsides* to separating out boosts, makes you a more attentive Phone Friend and a clearer-headed person. Mastodon web interface can't do this (although you can turn off boosts entirely, click the settings icon right of "Home"), IDK if other software apart from Subway Tooter can do this but in Subway Tooter you do it by opening your home timeline, then opening it again, now you'll have two home tabs, in the first one click settings icon and tick "Don't show boosts" and in the second one tick "Don't show replies" and "Don't show normal posts," your boosts are now quarantined. Tick "Don't close column" on both tabs so you don't accidentally close the tab, and choose colours for both.
* downside may appear later on

phanpy web client does something like this, the boosts and the regular posts are separated:
