Robin Sloan asserts (provocatively) that AGI is already here (and has been for a few years). “We’ve got this ubiquitous term, Artificial General Intelligence, & it appears that the Artificial Intelligence has become Really Very General, so … ?” https://www.robinsloan.com/winter-garden/agi-is-here/

@kottke I content that AGI was invented in the 18th century; it's called the Corporation, it runs on very slow software modules called "employees", and it's entirely malignant which is why it's trying to bootstrap itself to full independence of the people it parasitizes.
@cstross
wow - that’s three short stories bundled up 37 words. Love your work Mr Stross. Keep it coming.
I love this.
And this is the same Robin Sloan that did this fabulous "predict the future of news" video: https://archive.org/details/RobinSloanEPIC2014
@kottke well, we'd have fully autonomous self-driving cars by now if we had real AGI. Therefore I call bullshit.
@codinghorror @kottke maybe it’s general but just really dumb? Like, you could ask it about a wide gamut of topics and would get coherent, but useless answers. A bit like asking a five year old about driving your car. Indubitably a general intelligence, but not ready to grasp the intricacies of traffic and its many irrational situations.
@codinghorror @kottke
she's just playing with semantics. no sign of intelligence.
