Microsoft renamed the whole Office suite to Copilot. 🤣
Please bear in mind that calling "AI" output "slop" makes Satya Nadella sad. Under no circumstances should you call their office suite "Microslop Slopilot". That would just be mean and you're better than that.

@rysiek It's been really frustrating as an IT professional working for an organization that uses a Microsoft stack to constantly change our links, shortcuts, etc., to evade Microsoft's increasing attempts to point everything at Copilot. We used to be able to tell users to just go to Microsoft365.com to access their e-mail / documents / etc., online, but now, even though you still CAN do that, it's almost impossible to find as they turn the whole site into a giant Copilot input field and partition the other (much more useful) apps into submenus and further submenus.
It's not AI slop! That makes Microsoft's CEO sad.
Instead, call it Nadella. (Or Nadella Bukkake if you're feeling rude.) He'd appreciate being recognized as its promoter!
@rysiek I tried to start a Nextcloud instance, but was able to run only certain services - no luck with the office suite and Talk app unfortunately.

@filiplachert that's true, and part of the reason for that is all the ways Big Tech was able to create friction for anyone who doesn't want to use their software their way.
Not sure what you tried, but I know Hetzner and other providers have some managed Nextcloud products that are solid. I'd need to check about the office suite and Talk in them, though.
I'd love more communities – hackerspaces, for example, or communities built around fedi instances – to provide well configured Nextcloud.
@rysiek @trendytoots Back in the 1980s, the then owners of the Jack in the Box fast food chain worked up a new sandwich which had Monterey Jack cheese. They called it the Monterey Jack and in their excitement, perhaps bolstered by positive focus group response, there were reports they were going the change the name of the whole chain to Monterey Jack.
The sandwich came. It was okay. They didn’t change the name of the chain. The sandwich left the menu.
So, Copilot, not Office. La de da.
@rysiek I agree with your points here, but a correction. This isn't a rename of the Office suite, just the Microsoft 365 Office application, which is standalone and a wrapper for the web suite of apps. It's not a rename of the entire Office suite itself.

@rysiek Microsoft has a single app that's basically a wrapper for Excel Online, Word Online, etc. That single application used to be called Office or Microsoft 365 but now they're calling it Microsoft 365 Copilot. It's a Microsoft Store application.

@rysiek Office 365 is typically the offline Office applications in the subscription version (Basically like Office 2016, 2019, 2021, etc. but in a continually updated subscription). Microsoft 365 is usually the subscription as a whole. Office + Teams + whatever that businesses pay for.
It all sucks and is extremely confusing.
The Microsoft Office website office.com currently says:
"Welcome to the Microsoft 365 Copilot app - The Microsoft 365 Copilot app (formerly Office) lets you create, share and collaborate all in one place with your favourite apps now including Copilot."
As far as I can tell there is no longer any mention of the word "Office" on the Office website?

@rysiek it’s so strange that they are renaming the one thing most people actually want from Microsoft. Terrible decision to get rid of the branding.
@my_actual_brain the users are thoroughly locked-in and thus irrelevant. This is about the investors, who are only interested in AI hype.
It's just so odd, the MS Office brand actually has genuine fans with nostalgia for 30ish years of software and Microsoft are just throwing away this good will for the sake of briefly propping up their share price.

@FediThing @rysiek this is actually ingenious. They need to get the co-pilot usage numbers up. So if they rename every single product in their inventory to co-pilot it, it will be 100% co-pilot usage!
Google did something similar when Google Plus was failing, they forced everyone on YouTube to use Google Plus accounts just to comment.
