Nerds! I think I'm going to re-read all of the Dune books. I am struggling with the order but think I should do it chronologically but am interested to know what others think? X

@TheBreadmonkey @noondlyt Read the first & second, burn the rest
@TheBreadmonkey
I really never much cared for the dune books. Did you know that the first book tied for the Hugo Award? That was the first time ever. The other book was better.
@TheBreadmonkey chronologically, yes. But I haven't seen anyone punish themselves like this since I watched all of Deep Space Nine from the pilot to the end, never skipping even a single LOL Ferengi episode
@TheBreadmonkey I knew there must be someone out there who liked those...shudder...other novels who isn't called Kevin or Brian.
I'll be honest I haven't read them in maybe decades so I'm going in with a positive attitude, but recognise there may be dragons ahead....
@TheBreadmonkey I read and enjoyed all the Frank Herbert novels, but didn't pay any attention to the spin offs as they came out until they released Hunters/Sandworms to "complete" the series.
It was the most miserable reading experience I've ever had.
I just stick to the 6 books these days.

@TheBreadmonkey I’ve read ¾ of DUNE. Three times. Well, that’s not true: the third time I gave up maybe ⅓ of the way in. I like the plot — LOVE Villeneuve’s movies (Lynch’s was a beautiful mess) — Herbert’s wordsmithing just never worked for me. 🤷♂️ Don’t they get pretty insane after MESSIAH?
Forwards backwards up and down. You have to be both committed and also committed to read the entire world of Dune.
@TheBreadmonkey I had seen the DeLaurentis movie before I read the first book. I've read almost all of them and enjoyed them. I just had a time trying to adapt to something called a 'Cymek'
Lol. The machine wars contextualise SOME of the later Dune universe.
@TheBreadmonkey Dude it was a tough read for me. I really wanted it to be great. cymek cymek cymek
@TheBreadmonkey Doing this now as a matter of fact. Almost through God Emperor. Not the first time either. Original 6 only. Giant #nerd I guess.
I've read the ones by Frank, all 6 of them, 8 times now.
I've been advised by a dear friend and fellow Dune nerd, not to engage with the Brian/Kevin ones.
Would you advise otherwise, and if so, which ones?
They're not as well written and they take liberties so extreme as to not feel like the same universe. But it's nice world building and I cannot stand to part read something - I must do it all. But be prepared for sadistic robots and giant human brain space spider tanks named after Ancient Greeks. Also some confusing religious stuff.
@TheBreadmonkey
I think I'm gonna pass...
@TheBreadmonkey When you say all? Frank only? Or main story? Including prequels?
I've the "prelude" trilogy to read.
The whole lot. The latest prelude trilogy are the only ones I haven't read but appear to own. But I'm keen to do the whole lot from the beginning of the machine war.
@TheBreadmonkey That sounds like a lot! I'm going to read prelud and then the main story again.
@TheBreadmonkey IF you must choose, chronological. IF you want to push through the slough that are the Brian Herbert / Kevin J Anderson ... I'd suggest you just cut your own throat.
While the Frank books are beautifully written and aren't overwrought with explanations ... the Herbert/Anderson books are so, so repetitive ... so annoying ... so soul-sucking.
I'm an extreme fan. I have listened to every single one of the books. But I only would repeat the Frank ones.
Lol. Oh no I'm going back to the beginning and redoing the whole lot. I have done all of them except the latest 3 which I bought and never got around to reading. So I'm going back to the cymeks and bloody Omnius and Erasmus. Pour it all into my eyes!
@TheBreadmonkey I think Erasmus is one of the best characters ever devised by Herbert/Anderson.
@TheBreadmonkey You can tell I have strong opinions about these books. I have yet to read the very last trilogy ... I just plum ran out of steam for them.
Same! But I also love Dune so much so am going to throw myself in and see what happens!
@TheBreadmonkey let me know how it goes. Last time I did it, it took me a couple of months of listening. :)
Interesting conversation to me bc I picked up the original book last year and I intend to read it soon - it's a monster!!!! (Which is why I have put it off)
But I absolutely intend to read it.
So I'm probably a casual Dune fan at best. Assuming I don't love the first three - if I do, I just might keep going - but generally speaking for a casual fan, is going past the first 3 really necessary?
@TheBreadmonkey If it's as exciting as the movies, wouldn't snorting a bottle of melatonin be more time-effective?
@TheBreadmonkey chronological order 👍🏽
Only the books written by Frank Herbert though.
Lol I'm one of those heathens who actually really enjoyed (some of) the other books! 😂
@TheBreadmonkey It would probably help. 😁
