RE: https://mstdn.social/@rysiek/115842927683638628

Actually… Anyone else is being rate-limited on GitHub for completely normal browsing behavior lately?

If so, please hit me up. If this is a wider issue, I might see if I can delve a bit into it. :blobcatcoffee:

Edit: it would also be interesting to know if you were signed in when the rate limit hit you. 👀

@rysiek
This has been happening to me intermittently for about a week. I'm in east canada. I was NOT signed in.

A few times the error messages implied I was web scraping. I absolutely was not.

@rysiek Yes pretty sure I've had this when not signed in and it resolves as soon as you do sign in

@rysiek yup unathenticated requests are limited to a silly number (1 or 3?) for at least a month. I usually stay logged in for work reasons, so hard to tell when it happened exactly.

@rysiek forever 😊 I haven't run any serious tests, just browsed github in the wrong tab (few clicks similar to your experience). Then switched to the logged in tab when I noticed my mistake.

My recommendation is to not use github for anything serious and regularly backup your repos if your org still uses it.

@rysiek Not exactly yesterday, but I did hit a secondary rate limit for perfectly normal activity not all that long ago. I think I was trying to pull up an issue page, and that was my first request and it hit the rate limit.

Also, have you seen https://mamot.fr/@ploum/115842247227973416 and the blog post linked to from there?

@rysiek I've hit rate limits when following links on several occasions recently. Not sure of all the circumstances, but I know a couple have been when following links from Mastodon. My assumption was that all the Mastodon servers pulling a preview image triggered a rate limit on the specific page.

@mhkohne @rysiek I’ve also hit rate limits when following links to GitHub from Mastodon posts. That’s an interesting idea that this could be related to the MastoDDoS effect. I wonder if GitHub’s rate limiting also takes the lack/presence of HTTP referer headers into account.

@rysiek @bk1e I'll be interested to see what you can work out. I'd like to know if it's that a given page is rate limited, or if it's somehow me that's rate limited. If I think of it, I'll poke a bit next time I see it.

@rysiek yeah. And my conspiracy theory is that they did that so you cant search AI generated code.

Basically find one AI generated repo. Full vibe coding bs. Copy line of business logic and paste it in the search. You will instantly see the same lines of code in other repos XD

Its clearly visible for any AI generated CRUD app.
