“Furthermore, Autistic individuals have discussed how we may express empathy through sharing a similar experience or repeating scripts specific to a situation or feeling (Blanc et al., 2023). A non-Autistic person may misinterpret this as being self-centred. However, this may be related to how Autistic people tend to recall elements of an experience in an entire chunk, rather than isolate specific aspects of that situation (Blanc et al., 2023). “

I’ve been accused of one uping when I do this. But all I’m trying to say is, I get you.

@farah I've found that adding (in my opinion) or (I resonate because) to the post tends to help people understand that I am not trying to come in and dominate a post, I just type a lot and have a lot to say because I caught the post and it was good enough to make me stop and think.

Especially with text. Voice - I mask much better but I worked in customer service for about 15 years. Ultimate masking job.

@farah
The weird thing is, I do that and get criticized for it, but when the people who criticize me for doing that do the same thing, it's supposedly okay for them.

@farah Oh yeah. I do this a lot. I try to catch myself because I often will try to relate to another person's experience, and then I realize five minutes too late I've made the whole conversation about myself. 😅

@farah when a "normal" person does this, it's called "active listening".

(I know there are differences.)
