New powers allowing mobile phones to be seized from #asylumseekers without arresting them have come into force.

The government said it will help gather intelligence on smuggling gangs organising small boat crossings to the UK.

Officers will be able to demand that migrants remove their coats to search for phones and also check their mouths for SIM cards.

Mobile phones are a lifeline for asylum seekers.

The legal basis for this is unclear and will certainly be challenged.

@Geri Someone close to me works with a refugee charity. I hear regularly from them about how vital a mobile phone is to wading through bureaucracy and generally getting anything done

@urlyman @Geri it is impossible to deal with the asylum system without phone/ internet access. It is no different to accessing any other burocratic system
