- Finally, it might be helpful to be able to edit config files in the terminal window. So see if you can get an editor like micro, tilde or cte in your distributions, they are said to have next to no learning curve for anyone familiar with notepad.
(Did I mention become familiar with your distro's package management system? apt/synaptic, pacman, yum etc. You'll interact with it quite often. They usually have both GUI and terminal ways of operating them, too.)
These terminal/commandline tricks may very well just be fallback and last resort solutions. Depending on how you prefer to work and what distro you choose, you may not ever need them. But I think if you ever mess up it's good if you are able to make use of them.
