possibly-crap-air-quality hotel closer to venue?
better-air-quality hotel farther from venue?
unaffiliated cute modern boutique hotel that only lets you book <3mo out?
…comedy option of the "bed & breakfast" at the marina where the rooms /are friggin boats/? 🤣
@bitprophet how are you getting air quality info on the nearby hotels?
@phildini VERY poorly, i.e. by searching the various review sites for mentions of air, aircon, conditioning, conditioner, ac, … and looking for mentions of smelling nearby rooms / central air / broken air / whether windows open / etc. As you might imagine this has dogshit signal/noise ratio 🤡
However! Since it's a pseudo-tropical location I've realized "has balcony" is also a decent stopgap for "you can get fresh air regardless of AC quality".
in other #PyConUS random thoughts: I assume being LA means there will be a lot more outdoor seating at food/drink places…but also the outdoor seating will be in demand, instead of largely available for us covid-cautious folx (in places where May isn't necessarily fantastic weather)
@bitprophet AQI in Long Beach should be fine in May. As far as outdoor seating, you won't have to fight for it. It gets nippy at night and very few here are still COVID cautious.
@mttaggart oh ya I don't mean smoke AQI, just, some hotels have shit AC (I need cool temps to sleep) or shared-air AC (bad for not getting sick)
@bitprophet Ah makes sense! The smaller places may also allow you to open windows, which will nicely cool down the room at night.
@mttaggart yea the boutique-y place (as well as the farthest-from-venue conference-affiliated place) has small balconies you can open windows/door to, which would be a nice way to get fresh and cool air!
