What happens if you boost a toot from a Mastodon server that has gone offline (perhaps forever)? Does it work as normal, unless you try to visit the original website? Or do weird things break?

Below I will link to the test toot (that is currently unreachable). Next I will boost it.

@skyfaller totally depends on how the software the person uses is implemented. confusingly it's the combination of both their server, so a user on Mastodon who uses a client like Tusky might experience something different from a Mastodon user who uses the web client.

At SOME point the boost from the dead server should simply no longer render for anyone, but it depends on many variables including how often your server checks to see if another server is still online. Could be seconds to days
