Not my normal cat-centric content, but at least my photo includes a cat for scale.
After solely relying on a Chromebook for many years, I have finally gotten myself an "actual" PC, and so far I've been really happy with it. I absolutely loathe Microsoft Windows, and I had just accepted that my stance meant forsaking normal computer games. Thus the announcement of the Steam Machine really caught my attention: a basically-full PC that runs Linux but also plays most Windows games.
My initial plan was to just wait for its release, but the combined uncertainty with its release date/price, along with the continued physical deterioration of my current Chromebook (touchscreen broken, case cracking in multple places) encouraged me to consider alternatives. Many internet commentors scoffed at the Steam Machine, saying "you can just do that now with a mini PC and Bazzite," and so after googling what Bazzite was and learning more about it I realized that sounded like a fantastic plan.
I bought a GMKtec K11 mini PC and installing Bazzite was essentially painless (with the biggest issue being an inability to write the installer image to a USB drive using my Chromebook). And after that everything has pretty much just worked.
I didn't have to hunt down drivers or deal with package dependencies. I've been using the Steam client still as the basic way of playing games, and I've finally been able to start playing Baldur's Gate 3.
So if anyone else is looking to get away from Windows while not losing access to PC gaming, Bazzite is definitely worth trying out. The fact that I have a new and decently-specced computer has certainly helped with my experience using it, but it really has been my least-painful Linux experience so far (though to be fair, some of my bad experiences installing Linux were over 20 years ago). The two minor snags I've run into so far have had pretty straightforward workarounds. Using a portable monitor I can even comfortably sit on my couch with a screen in my lap, so I'm not just chained to my desk to use it.
