Strictly speaking, in modern terms, Hatsuyume (初夢) falls on January 2nd. People would generally not sleep on December 31st, so any January 1st dreams were examined on January 2nd.

In early Edo times a superstition emerged that dreaming of the following was particularly auspicious:
*Ichi-Fuji (一富士 Mt. Fuji)
*Ni-taka (二鷹 a Hawk)
*San-nasubi (三茄子 an Eggplant)

Although there are theories, it's unclear why these objects were placed together on a list.
