If you use an AI-generated image for your article/post, this indicates to me you might have also used AI-generated text.

If you use AI-generated text for your article/post then:

1- I have no idea if you verified the veracity of any claimed facts.

2- I have no idea what your own voice is.

3- I have no idea if this truly expresses your own views, and if you even cared to read it.

4- I have no idea what your intention is with this, other than exploiting my attention and clicks with the least amount of efforts on your part.

5- This shows me you have no respect at all for the labour that was stolen to build these tools, exploiting millions of artists and writers to make billions of dollars without any compensation to them whatsoever.

Why would I want to engage with any content like that?

• I don't want to communicate with a machine (I can do that by myself).

• I don't want to participate in this disgusting exploitation of artists and writers.

• And I want to communicate with another human, of course.

If your intention isn't to communicate with another human, then stop deceiving them making them think they are :no_ai:

I purposely us AI pictures when I want to show youth activities in articles but do not want to distribute any faces of kids on a public platform.

Use of AI is here an extra layer of protection for our participants instead of an indication that we do not take time to write that article ourselves.

The New Year card that we distribute coming Sunday will show 20 teenagers and we decided not to use a picture where kids could be recognised and instead used AI to prevent that.

@paulschoe
Unfortunately, these tools exploit the data of children as well. There were cases where generated images of children simply pulled an existing and recognizable photo of a real child from the model's database of scraped children photos.

If the goal is to protect the children, then using generative AI should be stopped entirely: https://theconversation.com/photos-of-australian-kids-have-been-found-in-a-massive-ai-training-data-set-what-can-we-do-233868

There are other ways to use graphics and public domain images that don't rely on children's photos or children's photos exploited without consent by genAI models.

The Conversation

Photos of Australian kids have been found in a massive AI training data set. What can we do?

Human Rights Watch has sounded the alarm over Australian children’s images found in a huge data set used to train AI models. It could be a breach of our privacy law.

I fully agree that 'AI developers need to be very careful about the provenance of the data sets they’re using.'

And that penalties need to be extremely severe given the possible negative consequences, the billion dollar evaluations of these companies and the fact that 'AI cannot unlearn the images.

But in my case, I am happy that I can use AI to ensure that no participants will be recognised when I publish information about our youth activities.

@Em0nM4stodon "f you use an AI-generated image for your article/post, this indicates to me you might have also used AI-generated text. " =>

This logic is too strong for me tbh...

AI images in articles are decorations, while AI text is content.

The fact that decorations (not important) is done in one method doesn't imply that the content (very important) is done in the same method. It's completely unrelated imo.

I validate your anger regarding labor and authenticity. But I have to be honest, blanket condemnations of AI feel exclusionary.

For many neurodivergent creators and individuals with disabilities, AI is an essential accommodation. It helps bridge the gap between ideas and execution.

When we say "no AI ever," we inadvertently tell disabled creators that their accommodated voices aren't welcome here.

Thank you for reading and hope you have a beautiful 2026. 🤓

@Em0nM4stodon Ages ago a colleague posted something on linked in that was AI generated and he was talking about how great it was. So I read it and pointed out a bunch of obvious mistakes and gaps. Rather than engage with that, he generated some AI bullshit response to me and posted that. I stopped engaging.

If I wanted ChatGPT’s opinion on something I can type the question myself. I do not need an educated person to set aside all their education, type into the chat bot and copy/paste its response. I could do that my damn self if that’s what I wanted. I don’t need a typing assistant.

@Em0nM4stodon I've been trying to pitch this at work since I started -- everyone else uses LLM generated cover art for the company blog (even though the text is all human-written) and I just make mine in Inkscape; nobody believes me that potential readers will be turned off by the obvious AI slop. One of my hopes for 2026 is that Business Thought Leaders realize that slop is a turn-off.

@roguelazer You can also tell them that, as a writer of articles myself, I never link to another article that is using generative AI, even just for the cover.

Because if they use AI for the article's cover, then there's a high probability it was also used for the text, and this makes it an unreliable source. It removes all potential credibility to the text.

I cannot link to references like that, it would also diminish the credibility of my own text.

For anyone who cannot afford an in-house graphic designer, Inkscape and public domain human photography is the way to go 👍

@Em0nM4stodon I'm sure this will make me a pariah, but hell. I just had (an LLM) diagnose a hardware issue in a laptop I've been suffering with for two years, after trying to ask around and getting ignored even on their official Discord.

I know all of the ethical issues, but I feel like I'm having a different experience than what everyone else is describing.

As someone whose experience of world is consistently being ignored when I reach out for help, what do I do? This actually worked.

@trashwizard Not trying to do the pariah thing. But I do want to engage on this question: this was personally useful for you and basically no one else. And it burned dog knows how much resources to produce that result. How valuable does that result have to be in order to justify that resource expenditure?

The burning of fossil fuels for the electricity and the water usage is a one-way process. It can’t be restored or renewed. (Renewable energy could be used, but in practice it isn’t because there isn’t enough) If everyone justified their own personal use without taking into account the costs on society, we will just burn the planet.

Even if it DOES work in some instance, is it reasonable for each person to make this individual choice and leave the collective society to deal with the aggregated consequences? Does the individual have any obligation to think about the collective, or is all the AI use OK as long as each individual finds their individual results useful? How much AI prompting and energy use and so on is OK?

Individuals can’t even know how much energy is being used because the shady AI companies won’t be honest.
How do we expect individuals to make this decision? Or do we all just ignore it and do what we want?

I’m asking in a bit of an inflammatory way, but it’s a legit question.

I don't want to be the pro-ai voice, but at least it replies and doesn't judge you. And yes, I had a similar experience.
On mastodon:
- how long does it take to thaw a frozen loaf of bread?
- 20 min with a toaster, the newest ones have the thaw function
- mine hasn't
- buy a new one, it's cheap
The same question asked to a bot was immediately answered

@sabrinaweb71 My question was how much waste and burning of the planet is acceptable to get these results?

Of course AI is right sometimes and useful sometimes. It can be right in ways that no other tech will be right. AI is also the least efficient, most wasteful computing technology we’ve ever invented. And its error rate is higher than almost any alternative. AI errors waste tons of energy, but don’t even give a useful result.

Is it OK that users both don’t know AND don’t care how much waste they’re creating? How does the fact that the AI answers “don’t judge” help us decide how much waste is OK?

Whose responsibility is it to think about this and take it into account?

For the record I'm not trying to be a pro-"AI" voice either. I'm coming from a place of frustration where I found a single useful application while knowing the ethical problems around energy, sourcing/plagarism, active scraping, etc.

Who owns the ethical burden of running and using these systems? Whether we're actively using them or not, we're still getting spammed by Amazon Rufus interjecting and self-prompting while shopping, for instance.
