@tj Frohes Neues Jahr!

107% sure this is your dmesg https://dmesgd.nycbug.org/index.cgi?do=view&id=8701 with a Ryzen AI 350 in it.

A friend is looking at the 16“ #framework flavour https://frame.work/at/en/products/laptop16-amd-ai300/configuration/new

Is it usable as a daily #FreeBSD PC (graphics, audio, microphone) or are there still swathes of things not working? Running CURRENT is an option.

Any other wisdom to impart ? 💭

Framework

Configure Framework Laptop 16 (AMD Ryzen™ AI 300 Series)

Choose from AMD and Intel system options, select your preferred memory and storage, operating system, and more customizations. Available in DIY and pre-built configurations.

@dch @tj

I believe there are also laptops from companies that don’t boast about funding white supremacists that are well supported by FreeBSD, if that’s a consideration for your friend.

@dch Just checking, are you aware of Framework's recent support of DHH and other toxic figures? I feel like it's important to decide whether that matters to you (or your friend) before buying, so just wanted to make sure you know

@jamey @david_chisnall I totally am & yes it matters a great deal to me. I was deeply disappointed; I’d hoped for better from them.

That said, I am not sure that buying a laptop from eg Lenovo or Dell is in any way better, I expect their support for politics in the US is likely to be 1000-fold of Framework‘s.

Buying tech is a bit like getting on a bus — if you can get closer to your desired destination, count that as a win. I’ve switched now to sourcing 2nd hand tech whereever possible.
