"In this study, parents’ concerns went a step further, assuming that queer books would negatively affect young people’s mental and physical health. Speakers tended to overstate the harm of reading books by extrapolating worst-case scenarios, assuming that books can result in young people taking real-life actions aligning with what they read."

"There is no evidence that reading books negatively impacts one’s mental health or leads to distress at home. On the contrary, research indicates that exposure to a diverse array of topics helps young people build empathy and is validating for young people whose lived experience mirrors the book’s themes and characters (Garces-Bacsal 2022)."

"Arguing that reading queer books negatively impacts young people’s mental health ignores the fact that many young people are LGBTQ+."
