@Taweret what in god's name is a "shock sock" and was it common for people to just wander in halfway into movies in the 60's?

60's black and white movie trailer title card: "For Maximum Shock Sock... see it from the beginning"

@Taweret also i think first poll where i just voted for all the options, these all look great. however i am a sucker for the 50's early 60's hyperventilating half-formed idea schlock so this devil doll trailer is really doing something for me.

@jonny @Taweret The first time I saw Star Wars, we had somehow wandered into the theater during the Vader-Kenobi duel. That deprived us of "shock sock". And now I have a name for it!

@jonny @Taweret "sock" like a punch, if i had to guess.

"if you want to get sucker punched by this plot, you'll have to start from the part where your guard is down!"

I also wonder if this was related to "second acters", who would slip into shows after intermission to dodge the admission fee.

@Taweret the full quote is "you'll learn the dummy's sinister secret only at the end of this most unusual suspense thriller. but for maximum shock sock, see it from the beginning" so like... they felt the need to explain both the entire concept of "stories having a linear order where some details are revealed after others" and also "in order to understand a story fully you have to hear the whole thing"

@jonny so, on the one hand, audiences then didn't understand the basic nature of storytelling. but on the other hand, they knew what a shock sock was. so it's hard to say which era is more cultured
