Everything old is new again!

The latest version of #Android has lockscreen widgets

This was a feature in early versions of Android. No idea why it was ever removed, but I'm glad it is back again!

Widgets on lock screen
To access your favourite widgets, swipe left from your
lock screen.

When you open an app using a widget, you'll need to
verify that it's you. Also bear in mind that anyone can
view them.

@Edent if I had to guess, it probably broke the security model in some way. Seems like it got removed in Android 5 (Lollipop) based on some searching.

That said, I'm curious how the security model has improved and if widgets are "read-only" from a permissions perspective. I don't think we'd want a widget to enable changing something in the phone while it remains locked.

As always, folks, be vigilant about what you put on your lockscreen.
