# FACT warns illegal streamers following joint investigation with police

The UK's Federation Against Copyright Theft (infringement, but anyway...) has obtained a list of people who have allegedly purchased streaming devices preconfigured to access infringing streaming services, and has emailed them.

> During investigations into Edge and operators of another illegal streaming service (currently pending a criminal prosecution), law enforcement seized details of customers who had purchased access to so-called “loaded” Firesticks, Android, or Kodi devices. Those customers have now been contacted directly to warn them of the dangers of continuing to use illegal streaming services.

@neil Doesn't streaming come under the case law that access to news articles (was it), where simply accessing over the internet is treated the same as reading a book. Even if the book is not a legitimate copy, reading it is not copyright infringement. So the streamers are infringing not the streamees?

@neil I do hope they (and the police) have all their GDPR ducks in a row for this.

@neil Those things are often full of malware that will use a person's Internet connection for nasty things.

@ryanc I can quite imagine!

That is one of the limbs of FACT's usual warnings, IIRC.

@neil Calling copyright infringement "theft" is profound clownery, and scaremongering about benign things (most forms of piracy) makes people dismiss the genuine issues (like this).
