#homelab #pcbuilder for the kids, I scrounged up an AM4 socket mainboard and a CPU. Without memory, or GPU, should I expect it to at least be able to start the fan in the power supply?

A lot of this is 2nd hand and I’m wondering if some of it is broken.

I do have a couple of graphics cards I can try, but no DDR4 memory until Austrian customs releases it, they received it 10 days ago.

#homelab #pcbuilder well bad news. The PSU is fine. But the cpu has bent pins and the mainboard has a damaged facade above the pins. I’m guessing the whole thing is now garbage. At least beyond my old eyesight to realign the pins, and definitely not possible to repair the cpu socket myself. Sucks.

Going to try this excellent guide https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/How+to+Fix+Bent+CPU+Pins/140367 for the cpu pins but get the sharp eyed kids to do it. Not sure what to do about the mainboard socket as even with a phone camera I can’t figure out what the damage is.

@dch In my (probably outdated) experience, without RAM all you get is error beeps.

@dch having tested a stripped down AM4 board to isolate a fault recently, I would expect it to generate error beeps without a GPU and/or RAM fitted.

If everything is connected, the PSU should be able to be switched on by bridging the power switch pins on the board briefly. CPU fan should activate at least.
