Am I supposed to feel sympathy when someone keeps all their data on a single platform's "free" services & then loses access arbitrarily and has no access to "their" data?

I can certainly join them in anger again the #platform but, there really needs to be more awareness of the risks of becoming so dependent on companies and the need to keep control of your #data.

@ncoca Is there some reason why you wouldn't feel sympathy?

@gcvsa I do, but there's also a tiny bit of "what did you expect" in there.

@ncoca You're never obliged to feel anything. Not everyone is in a position to be fully informed about these hazards, though, or adequately resourced to be able to do something about them. We have the time to read about the risks, and then sit here sharing ideas about how the internet could be better. That means we have time and resources others don't have—we didn't need to spend that time working, or supervising children, or caring for elderly infirm relatives, or doing unpaid domestic labour.

@ncoca I think the platforms are very enthusiastic about giving users the impression their data will be safe and secure. To then not live up to that is a dereliction of duty. The responsibility falls on the platforms to fulfil their promises, not on their victims to anticipate the ways they might be betrayed by bad-faith operators. Of course, trying to anticipate that will keep you safer in life. But it shouldn't be the expectation—that's called victim blaming.
