We often forget what a powerful thing we are building here. Eugen Rochko just reminded us: this isn’t "social media." It is a social network.

That sounds like a small difference, but it’s huge. It means the focus is on connection—human to human—not on algorithms designed to keep you scrolling forever. That’s why the vibe here is so different. It’s intentional.

Think about it simply: We choose our servers. We set our rules. That gives us control over the experience and who we want to talk to. If you don’t like a server, you move, and your connections move with you.

That kind of power—the power to choose and curate your own online world—is an undeniable shift away from the giant companies that think they know best.

The #Fediverse is where we go to actually connect. It is where we realise that the internet should be about people, not profits.

If you’re here, you’ve already made the best choice.

for people new to the #OpenWeb --> Think of it this way: @Mastodon is the house; the #Fediverse is the power grid.

You trust the house (Mastodon) to connect with people. The power grid (Fediverse, running on ActivityPub) is simply the open, non-corporate system that lets your house talk to other houses without a giant landlord controlling the whole street.

Trusting Mastodon means you already trust the concept of the Fediverse. It’s just the plumbing that gives you control.

@Crissy @Mastodon we don't have enough humans who would understand "it's a lot like FidoNet back in the days."

Another analogy for the drivers out there: @Mastodon is the car you drive. 🚗 It is easy to use and it is what you see every day.

The Fediverse is the road system. 🗺️ It is just a name for all the different types of roads (servers) that allow your Mastodon car to drive to other towns (other apps/servers like Kbin, Pixelfed, etc.).

Since your car (Mastodon) can drive freely, you already like the road system (Fediverse)! It just means no one company owns all the roads. You already trust the parts that matter most—the people you follow. Realising this small distinction makes the whole concept much friendlier!
