The thing that's particularly disturbing to me about the direction U.S religion has taken is, if there's any one thing you could point to and say this is what's good about it, it's how it brings people together in community. Yet the way religion has been playing out over recent years has been to divide, disrupt, and generally incinerate any sense of communal & civic inclusivity.

Not saying it's unique in the history of sectarianism, but wow is it depressing. @memeorandum https://universeodon.com/@memeorandum/115788293291176311

@jaredwhite yeah, I'm involved in a group that meets in a UU church, and within that there's sensitivity for people who are uncomfortable with what churchgoers have done with the community that religion has created, and acknowledgement that even a UU framework may be off-putting for participants.

Obviously we're outliers, and I don't know about tends generally, but within that group are people who, a decade or two ago, might have even been seen in a UCC...

@danlyke That's really fantastic. I wish I could muster the energy to host a sort of post-Christian community group that still looks at a lot of the traditional use cases for religious activity (food distribution, free services related to mental health, volunteerism, family activities, education, etc.) Y'know…all the actual stuff Jesus said to focus on most of the time… 😅

@jaredwhite yeah, there's a whole class of civic activity that isn't covered well, and interest focused groups like square dancing (that I'm deeply involved in) have physical ability as a filter, which is not a great way to build equitable community that sticks with people as they age or lose abilities.

Of course my experience with housing and mobility advocacy also leaves me thinking that most people don't actually give a shit... Sigh.
