@rbreich Dipshit Donnie definitely didn't pull himself by his bootstraps. Instead he was a trust fund baby. Also his father got rich by using government programs. I am reading a book about that now. The title is "Lucky Loser"...

@rbreich there is an oft repeated trope particularly by the unforgiving religion that the person has brought their woes on their own head. No acknowledgement of luck, circumstance or ranfom third party event that they couldn’t possibly mitigate against.

@rbreich The original meaning of "to pull ons self up by their own bootstraps" was an expression of an obviously impossible effort resulting in inevitable failure due the social position of the impoverished.
It was later used as an expression of the efforts of the mythical "self made man."

@rbreich "pulling yourself up by your own bootstraps" means to do something that is or seems impossible, not what the Right seems to think it means.

@rbreich @chu @alt4you

Casual reminder that the myth of "pulling yourself up by your bootstraps” is a cruel hoax designed to convince poor people from all walks of life that the injustices they face are a result of their own actions, rather than an oppressive system rigged against them.

Every broke-ass motherfucker I know also perpetuates this suicidal bullshit, because they each believe they're the one true martyr of "rising above" and wish to be recognized for it.

The serfs in Russia eventually learned this and upended the old system in the messiest way possible. Better for the rich to share a bit. Democratic socialism is better for them than revolution.
